- There are several safe options for treating depression other than medication.

Safe Ways of Treating Depression during Pregnancy

Bright Light Therapy was originally developed to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder, but more recently has been shown to be an effective treatment for depression.  It has been studied with pregnant women and found to be well tolerated and effective.  Therapy involves sitting in front of a special light box for 20 - 60 minutes per day.

Heart Rate Variability (HRV) biofeedback trains you to achieve a state of peaceful relaxation that improves emotional stability and mood.  Research shows it to be effective in treating depression.  The only physical intervention is your breathing and relaxation. The HRV device passively gives you feedback on how you are doing.

Psychotherapy is proven to be effective in treating depression without side effects.  Therapy involves talking about your thoughts, feelings and behavior with a caring professional who knows how to help.  It can also help you to improve relationships, manage stress and adjust to having a new member in the family.  In Hawaii, it is covered by your health insurance.
